Gum Problems

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is the progressive destruction of the gums and bone around the teeth.

What are the signs?

The signs of gum disease are:

  • Swollen, bleeding puffy gums
  • Bad breath
  • Loose teeth (during the advanced stage)

What are the causes of gum disease?

Gum disease is caused by the body’s reaction to the bacteria found in plaque.  Some people are more susceptible than others.  Susceptibility can be inherited genetically, and can be increased by diabetes and through smoking.

What are the consequences?

More teeth are lost due to gum disease than tooth decay.  Some of the consequences of gum disease are:

  • Diabetes
  • Strokes
  • Heart disease
  • Lung disease
  • Giving birth to low birth weight babies

How is gum disease treated?

Gum disease can be treated in two ways, either by Conservative Gum Treatment, or Laser Treatment.

  • Conservative Gum Treatment
    • This involves the removal of tartar and plaque from the pockets under the gum.  We will also teach you the best methods of cleaning your teeth correctly to maintain your oral health.
